High-Intensity Discharge Lamp

The HID lamp is the a type of lamp that generates light by source of the electrical arc between the tungsten electrodes which is installed inside the transparent or translucent fused alumina or fused quartz arc tube.  The fused alumina tube is filled with both metal salts and gas. The gas helps the arc’s initial strike. When the arch is started, it gets heated and evaporates the metal salt that forms plasma that extremely increases the strength of the light generated by the electric arc as well as it uses very low amount of power. The HID lamp is a kind of arch lamp.

Compared with incandescent and fluorescent lamps, the HID have better luminous efficacy because a greater amount of their emission is in the visible light while different to heat.  Their wall-plug luminous efficiency is also a lot higher i.e. they provide a better amount of light per watt of the electricity input. Several different kinds of chemistry are used in the arch tubes of the high intensity discharge lamps, depending on the desired features or characteristics of the light intensity, color rendering index, correlated color temperature, lifespan and energy efficiency. There are several kinds of HID lamps are produced and some of them are Mercury vapor, Sodium vapor, Metal halide,  UHP lamps, Xenon short arc , Ceramic MH lamps and many more.

HID lamps are used for various purposes in different fields such as large public areas, gymnasiums, football stadiums, warehouses, movie theaters, outdoor activity areas, parking lots, pathways and roadways. It is also used in projection displays or DLP or LCD projectors, automobiles and many more.
