Electricity Pylon

Electricity pylon is also known as transmission tower, hydro tower or ironman is a tall structure, generally a lattice tower, which is used to support the electrical conductor for the electric power transmission. Electricity pylon is generally used in high voltage DC and AC electric system and they come in variety of sizes and shapes. It is generally available from 49 ft to 180 ft and also available in excess of 980 ft high.  It is generally made from steel and various other materials such as wood and concrete.  Some of the main transmissions towers which are used in several parts of the world are transposition towers, tension towers, terminal towers and suspension towers.  Most of the Electricity pylons combine these main features. Although a long distance electricity transmission is essential, Electricity pylon and the overhead power lines are generally considered   to be a type of visual pollution.  In order to lessen the   visual impact several methods are used and one such method is the undergrounding.

In United States, United Kingdom and other English speaking nations generally call Electricity pylon as Transmission tower.  The word “Electricity pylon”   actually comes from the main shape of the structure of the lattice tower, which is an obelisk-like thing that tapers towards the top and it is generally used in the UK and several other places in Europe.  In most of the parts in United States the term “pylon” is commonly used   for the traffic cones.  In other places such as Canada, they call it as hydro tower that actually comes from the hydroelectric power utility firms.  For high and extra high voltage AC transmission lines uses the three-phase electric power.  The tower should be designed in order to carry three or multiple of three conductors.
