Manufacturing Cost

Manufacturing cost is the cost associated with the production of the products. The manufacturing costs are the unexpired costs (assets) until the products are sold, then they are charged of as an expense. It is the cumulative total of all he resources that are directly included in the process of making all the goods and services. It is also referred to as the factory overhead, factory burden and manufacturing support costs. Manufacturing costs include costs such as direct materials and direct labor along with non manufacturing costs.

The cost of manufacturing includes expenses associated with the purchase of raw materials. The overall manufacturing cost of is extremely important as the goal of most production companies is to earn a profit by selling goods manufactured and sold by the company. The available resources as used at the best of its advantage when the various materials used in the manufacturing are effectively used. This enables the company to earn the highest amount of return on each unit that is sold at the current price.

When the manufacturing costs of the company are increasing, the company will investigate status of each relevant and determine where the costs are increasing. The increase in the costs may be due to various factors like the increase wages of the labor force, rise in the prices of the raw materials or with the purchase of new equipment which is used for the manufacturing of the product. The company conducts a close monitoring of the various costs of manufacturing can lead to ideas on how to utilize available resources to better advantage.

The calculation of manufacturing costs differs from one nation to another. There are various definitions that constitute the direct expenses. Hence various companies determine the cost of

labor and cost of direct materials differently. Some consider it as a direct expense and others indirect expense.
