A portfolio theory is a theory on how a how risk-averse investors can construct portfolios to optimize or maximize expected return based on a given level of market risk, emphasizing that risk is an inherent part of higher reward. This theory is also known as the portfolio management theory.

The investment decision has a consideration of the type of the brokerage account. Depending upon the type of brokerage account that an investor has, the investment managers may or may not have a permissible difference in making decisions without consulting the investor. The factors that contribute to an investment decision include capital on hand, projects or opportunities available, general market conditions, and a specific investment strategy. These decisions are concerned with the asset side of a firm's balance sheet, such as the decision to offer a new product.

The investment decision is also known as capital budgeting is one of the fundamental decisions in the business management. The managers of a business determine the investment value of the assets that a business enterprise has within its control or possession. In finance the various types of financial investments include shares, other equity investment, and bonds (including bonds denominated in foreign currencies). The financial assets of the company are then expected to provide income or positive future cash flows, and may increase or decrease in value yielding the investor capital gains or losses.
