Introduction to Routing
Routing can be defined as transferring data through a network in different ways to different destinations Routing and Routing protocols made the Internet easy by making sure that the ISP or the Internet service providers are correctly connected to each other. For example networking data in a telephonic department is sent via cables. Routing is carried out in electronic network such as Internet, Transportation network such as transport. Routing process is generally carried out through Routing Tables, which in turn hold routes to be performed on different network. Routing tables play an important role for efficient routing as they hold the routes and are stored in router’s memory. The function of routing is to select the best path so that the data reached to their respective destinations. In Routing two operations are performed, one is the source routing and the other is the destination routing. In the source routing all the information regarding how to reach to reach the destination is stored in form of packets. In the destination Routing, the data which is sent is received and retrieved. In OSI Model and TCP/IP Networking Protocols Routing is one of the main component through which data is being sent.
Routing can be broadly classified into two categories. They are Static Routing and Dynamic Routing.
In Static Routing the administrator uploads the informationg about the networks manually. As this is being done manually there is no need to worry about the routes. Because of this there is low consumption of bandwidth, due this one opt for cheaper routers. There are disadvantages of using this type of Routing as it is done manually Reconfiguration and reorganizing is difficult.
Coming to Dynamic Routing the administrator defines a routing protocol thorough, which the routes can determine Due to this Routing process automatically updates it routes whenever a new topology is received. Dynamic Routing is based on Broadcasting. It helps in determining the best path by the Routing protocol. In Dynamic Routing the distance of the paths are calculated and the path with the lowest distance is used.
The main or the basic principle for achieving a successful Routing is its Correctness Apart from this Route used should be reliable and optimal. It should also adapt quickly which the changing technology , support different net works through which computers are connected.
