LAN

LAN is the short form of Local Area Network which connects the computers within its domestic area. Such networks are found at homes, schools and offices. These local networks are usually characterized by high rate of data transfer. In the past ARCNET and Token ring were used in local networks. These days Ethernet, twisted pair cables and Wi-Fi are more common among the local network connections. Ethernet cables, network adapters are cheaper than wireless networks and other advanced form of local area networks. These local network computers can connect within two computers or could connect thousands of computers.

Structure of LAN

LAN forms are distinct on the basis of their topology, protocols and media. The topology suggests the arrangement of devices which could be in the form of a ring or a straight line. In the ring network, the nodes are in the form of closed loop. Ring network has the advantage of covering larger distances. The encoding specifications which may be peer to peer or client server form is described in the protocol of the local area network. Local networks could be connected by media like twisted pair of wires, coaxial cables, optical fibre cables or through radio waves. A group of people connected by local network are known as LAN party. The expansion board that connects the computers in the network is known as LAN adapter or Network Interface Card.

Benefits of LAN

LAN helps the information stored in one computer to be accessed easily from other computers. File backup is easier through local area networks. Laser printers or scanners could be easily shared by many computers through these local networks. Internet is also shared through these local network connections. Disaster recovery is made simple. Control and maintenance of many computers are easier through local area network connections.

Wireless LAN connections are more preferred as they give more freedom of movement within the premises. Besides that they are also easily installed. These wireless local area networks are used in hospitals, stock exchanges and other trade centers. The Local area network has an administrator which supports and supervises the management of the network. The administrator would also scan the backup server to detect faults. Regular tests for the secondary power supply are also conducted so that the network can be powered in emergency situations. The administrator also checks the status of software and equipment's license agreements apart from upgrading the existing software.
