Disk Partition

After having installed a hard drive in a computer, it has to be partitioned before the system is put into use. Disk partition will mean dividing the entire storage into different segments. The segments are known as partitions. After partitions have been made it becomes simpler to format and can be used on a computer. With the availability of the partition editor software a segment or a unit can be created, size of the unit can be altered, deleted and manipulate these partitions on the hard disk.

Dividing the File System into Segments

For 80GB hard drive it is possible to segment the entire storage into four partitions namely operating systems, data, music and images. There are various types in which partition are made these days. The master boot record partitioning scheme is used in DOS, Microsoft windows and Linux on Pc compatible computer systems. The MBR will list the information about the partitions on the hard drive and this table will split them into further 4 partition table entries, with each corresponding to a partition.

The Positive Side of Partition

There are several advantages in disk partition. The division of the operating system and program files from user files will permit image backups to be made to the operating system and to the installed software. So the partition will have a specific area for operating system virtual memory swapping. A user can access the file that is frequently used by keeping the data nearby. Log files and cache can be isolated from each other which can change the size, making the system file full.

In Recovery and Identifying Corrupt File

Disk partition can be highly helpful in protecting and separating the files for easier recovery of corrupted files and operating system installation. For instance if one partition is corrupt, the other partitions can remain safe and unaffected. Different segment should be made for read-only file which can to some extent prevent file system becoming corrupted. Partition will help enhance the performance of computers and at times even play a role in steady operations of the system.

There are primary partitions and extended partition while the primary contains only one file system in other a hard disk contains an extended partition. The extended partition is further divided into multiple logical partitions. Earlier when there were no advanced versions of software system, partition was the first essential one to be done in partition aspect. But with the arrival of disk partition several partitions are made easier. Such disk partition is proved to be helpful for the computers.
