Booting

Booting, which is also known as bootstrapping in computing terms, is the process that begins when a computer system is switched on. It is the primary step and operation that a system does when the power is turned on. The boot loader is mainly responsible for the main operation of the system for the computer.

This term seem to have been derived from the idiom 'to pull oneself up by one's bootstraps' which refers that a computer has to be switched on first for the power to be received. The central processors of the computers are supposed to implement program code found in read-only memory, random access memory or from an operator’s console.

Operating Systems and Booting Mechanisms

Modern operating systems are stored on nonvolatile data storage devices like hard disks, DVD, USB and Floppy disks. When the power is turned on, the system must execute a minute program stored in ROM along with the bare minimum of data needed to access the non volatile devices from which the operating system programs and data are loaded into RAM.

Booting or loading an operating system differs a lot from installing it, which is a single time activity. When we install the operating system we are asked several questions such as to select options or configuration choices. After these processes operating system on the hard disk is booted into random access memory.

The Input-Output System

There are certain steps to identify how this booting works on the computer. After turning on the computer, operating system has been established to boot, the basic input output system ROM is woken up and has the duty to initiate other tasks. The basic input output system is already loaded because of the inbuilt ROM chip and the RAM. This will further make sure that the other computer’s elements are operational. Then the input output system’s boot program will seek the special programs to load the operating system onto the hard disk.

It receives and gives message to the operating system before boot files are located. Having identified drive A but it’s not a system disk, the input output system next looks at the first sector and copies information it into specific locations. One of the first operating system files that are loaded in the computer is a system configuration file. Information in the configuration file tells the loading program which specific operating system files are needed to be loaded. Once the operating system files have been loaded, the operating system is given control of the computer and performs requested initial commands and then waits for the interactive user input.
