Classical Studies
Branch of humanities dealing with languages, literature, philosophy, history, art, archaeology and other cultures that were famous in Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome during classical Antiquity is known as classical studies. It is also known as classical civilization or classics. The word 'classics' is derived from the Latin word ‘classicus’. It means belonging to the highest class of citizens. John Milton, George Berkeley, Edward gibbon, William Ewart Gladstone, Theodor Mommsen, Karl Marx, Soren Kierkegaard, Frederich Nietzsche, sir James George Frazer, Oscar Wilde, A.E Housman, John Buchan Enoch Powell &Boris Johnson are some famous classicists. Earlier the study of classics was the principal study in humanities.
Humanities
Academic discipline that study about human condition is known as humanities. In humanities, human conditions are studied using methods that are primarily analytical, critical or speculative. Humanities include ancient and modern languages, literature, history, philosophy, religion and visual performing arts like movies and music. Humanities can be considered as social science also. It includes technology, anthropology, area studies, communication studies, cultural studies, linguistics and law. Professionals and scholars working in the field of humanities are known as humanists. ‘Classics’ is the major field of humanities. Analytically collected information about the past is known as history. It refers to the study and interpretation of the records of humans, societies, and institutions. The study of languages is known as linguistics and it is the backbone of modern humanities. Law can be considered as rule capable of enforcement through institutions. Music includes music performance, music education, musicology, music theory and composition. Theatre is a part of performing arts. Human movement presented in a social, spiritual or performance setting is known as dance.
Classical Antiquity
Classical antiquity represents cultural history of Mediterranean Sea, encompassing ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Classical antiquity is also known as classical era or classical period. Greek and Roman literature like Aeschylus, Ovid and Homer flourished in this period. It started with earliest recorded Greek poetry of Homer. Classical era was continued with the emergence of Christianity and the decline of Roman Empire. It ends with the dissolution of classical culture. The language, politics, educational systems, philosophy, science, art and architecture of the modern world is greatly influenced by Ancient Greek civilization. A mode of architecture employing vocabulary derived from classical antiquity is known as classical architecture. It can be applied to any mode of architecture like Classical Chinese Architecture. Any architecture that uses Classical Aesthetic Philosophy can be referred as classical architecture.
