Ideal Real Gases
An ideal gas is one in which all collision between the molecules are elastic and there is no intermolecular forces of attraction.s.An ideal gas is one which obeys the general gas equation PV=nRT. And also other gas laws at all temperature and pressure whereas the real gas does not obey the gas equation and other gas laws at all temperatures and pressures.
An ideal gas is made up of particles that they do not attract or repel one another. real gases are made up of atoms or molecules that they attract one another strongly. At ordinary temperature and pressure the real gases behave like ideal gases. Once the real gases are heated or compressed its behaviour is different from ideal gases.
PV/nRt= z where Z is compressibility factor. For real gases Z may be less or more than1.
If Z < 1 it is more compressible. If Z > 1 it is less compressible.
The force of attraction between the gas molecules is negligible which can be considered at high temperature and low pressure because the molecules will be far apart. At high pressure and low temperature the volume of the gas will be small and there will be the existence of attractive forces.
| Ideal gases | Real gases |
|---|---|
| They obey gas laws at all conditions of temperature and pressure | Only at low pressure and high temperature they obsey gas laws because the inter molecular force is negligible. |
| When compared to the total volume of the gas the volume occupied by the molecules is negligible. | When compared top the volume of the gas the volume occupied by the gas is not negligible. |
| They obey gas equation | They obey vanderwaals equation. |
| The force of attraction between the molecules is negligible. | The force of attraction between the molecules is not negligible. |
