Gas Absorption

What is gas absorption? Well, Gas Absorption is an operation in which a gas fusion comes in touch with a liquid in the objective of preferentially liquefies more than one compounds of the gas fusion and to deliver a solution of them in the liquid form.

It is nothing more than a huge transformation of a gas from the gas state to a liquid state, which takes place rather rapidly. The solute which was transmitted is more or less absorbed by the liquid. Well, this is gas absorption.

There is another form of transfer, which is called the gas desorption, it is also a mass transfer but from the opposite direction, like that from the liquid phase to the gas phase, however, the values of both the systems are one and the same.

But let’s just focus on the subject at hand: Gas Absorption. As for the analysis for Gas Absorption, it is easy and simple case where only one component of the gas solute is absorbed. It is believed that the other components of the gas are presumed to be non-soluble in the liquid, that is to say, the other gas components present are inert components, and liquid is believed to be non-volatile, which goes on to say that there is no transfer whatsoever of the molecules from the liquid to the gas phase.

On top, we presuppose that there is no chemical reaction at all in the system and it is believed to be operating at isothermal condition. And hence in the course of action, the gas absorption which comprises the diffusion of solute from the gas phase through a torpid or non-diffusing liquid.

Take a look at the operation of gas absorption:

There are methods to come in contact with gas and liquid, which is possible, and they are counter-current and co-current operation. Although both the gas absorptions are highly important, it is counter-current gas absorption which is widely used in the flourishing chemical industry.

As for the counter-current operation, the gas go through the column or tower from below as leaves at the top, whereas the liquid enters from the top and flows in opposite direction and exits from the bottom.

As for the absorption equipment, it is mostly conducted in tray, such as plate or stage, columns, packed columns, spray towers, bubble columns and centrifugal contactors. On the whole, the operating must be high and the temperature should be low for an absorber, so as to curtail stage requirements to lessen the equipment volume to make room for the gas flow.
