Endoscopy

Endoscopy refers to inside looking of body cells for medical findings. An instrument used for this purpose is referred as endoscope. It helps proper examination of hallow body cavity of an organ. Endoscope is unswervingly introduced in to organs unlike other medical equipments.

Components of endoscope

This medical instrument consists of below mentioned components like

  • Lens to transmit the images that comes from fiberscope
  • Tubes that are flexible or rigid
  • Light delivery system from optical fiber system
  • Manipulators to permit medical equipment to pass through

History

Philipp Bozzini of Mainz first proposed a light conductor named "Lichtleiter" in the year 1806 to view human body cavities.  William Beaumont of Michigan developed endoscope in the year 1822.  Charles David developed hysteroscope in the year 1908 where internal light system like bulb is affixed. Georg Wolf manufactured rigid endoscopes in the year 1906 and Sussmann designed flexible gastroscope in the year 1911. Gastroscope with camera was developed in the year 1950. Harold Hopkins designed fibroscope in the early 1950s. Subsequent research and development led to the invention of Fiber endoscope with better image quality. Fiber optical endoscope was invented by Fernando Alves Martin during 1963-64. Fiber endoscope was first introduced by S.E. Miederer of  the University of Bonn/Germany in the year 1976.

Risks associated with Endoscopy

Risks that are associated with Endoscopy techniques are as follows.

  • Infection
  • Spreading
  • Painful
  • Punctured organs
  • Over narcotic

Post Endoscopy treatment

After Endoscopy treatment, individuals are left with some sort of sore throat. Insulphated air used during the time of treatment leads to saline gargles. Side effects are so mild. As weeks roll on, the symptoms disappear. When patient is completely recovered, care provider suggests him diet control and medications. Use of sedatives may cause patients unable to handle heavy machineries or materials during the rest of  their lives.
