Novel Therapeutic Cancer Approach
Cancer sufferings are reduced by the invention of novel therapeutic approach. The drugs are delivered in systematic way. Following are novel therapeutic cancer approaches.
Intra arterial chemotherapy
This Intra arterial (IA) therapy was first proposed in the year 1980s was feasible novel therapy of cancer. However this therapy cannot withstand neurotoxicity effects like visual impairment, ocular pain and leukoencephalopathy. For instance, patients with intra arterial and intra venous treatment showed significant symptoms of visual loss and survival life. The loss is evident with increased use of IA Cisplatin. In addition to it, the use of intra arterial chemotherapy is not suggested for individual with CNS tumors.
Blood brain barrier disruption
Research of using osmotic agents like mannitol and chemotherapy to disrupt blood brain barrier as drug delivery agent is under investigation. Individuals showed stroke like effect when osmotic agent was used with chemotherapy. However, the survival of life is increased. Use of positron emission tomography to study intra arterial therapy with osmotic agent mannitol can easily pass through blood brain barrier. This permeability increases the drug delivery actions. This action is much more similar to normal brain function. This blood brain barrier disruption seems to be better novel therapeutic approach for glioma individuals.
Immune therapies
Specific function of immune therapies to treat CNS tumors is the best novel approach to treat the cancer. Immune therapies involve the use of tumor specific antigens like interleukin, and PHD finger protein. Some of the immune therapies approach for cancer treatment is antibody therapy, intracavity cytokine and adoptive immunotherapy.
Convection enhanced delivery agents
With the help of implantable catheter, drugs are directly delivered in to tumor cavity using pressure pumps. This therapy can bypass blood brain barrier. Other methods of drug delivery are labeled cytokines, fusion products of toxins with antibodies, antibodies and traditional chemotherapeutic agent.
Gene therapy
The aim of gene therapy is to metastasis the glioma. Herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase, HSV is a common gene used for gene therapy. When HSV-tk is injected in to individual they phosphorylate ganciclovir which are lethal to cancer cells. Other such instance of gene therapy is p53 gene administration. Adp53 is p53 encoding gene administration. This is widely used to treat cancer at present.
Signal transduction inhibitors
Signal transducing agents like gefitinib, rapamycin, gleevac, imatinib mesylate are used for treating CNS tumors. Combination of these agents to treat cancer is under research.
